Computational analysis of legal data

I analyse large collections of legal decisions to understand how legal criteria are applied in practice, from landlord–tenant decisions to the European Court of Human Rights’ use of external legal authority. Much of this work uses language models, for example for specialist legal annotation and mapping legal criteria to decisions. The computation supports legal interpretation rather than replacing it.

AI tools for access to justice

I led the development of JusticeBot, which turns legal rules and decisions into guided pathways for people without legal training. Related work includes DALLMA for semi-structured legal drafting, LLMediator for online dispute resolution, and studies of how AI can interpret layperson narratives and images of legal documents.
